The Homeopath

Homeopathy

Dr Audrey is a primary healthcare practitioner and is therefore clinically trained to diagnose and treat disease. Her holistic approach enables her to listen to and understand the patient as an individual taking into consideration the person as a whole.  This includes their mental, emotional and physical health.

At the initial consultation, Dr Audrey will determine and prescribe the medicine that specifically corresponds to your ailment, be it a cold or flu or a more complicated list of serious illnesses. A physical examination and thorough medical history helps her to determine if other special investigations are necessary to aid with the diagnosis. Your previous medical history is very important to her, so make sure to bring all your previous X-rays, blood results, scans and list of current medication.

What is Homeopathy?

According to Dr Samuel Hahnemann, founder of Homeopathy, ‘the sole mission of the physician’, or Homeopath, ‘is to cure rapidly, gently, permanently.’ Homeopathy uses medicines prepared from natural substances to treat and, if possible, cure disease. It is non-toxic and does not harm the body.

Homeopathic medicines stimulate specific defence mechanisms in the body needed to fight the condition or disease.

Homeopathy is a holistic form of medicine that takes into account every aspect of the patient’s life, diet, nutrition, environment and being, and ensures a better chance at success and health maintenance by supporting the action of the medicine.

This makes it a powerful therapeutic system that employs the body’s own healing potential to the benefit of the patient’s over-all health and ability to maintain good health.

Frequently Asked Questions

The correct homeopathic prescription can be used for any condition, from minor acute ailments to serious chronic disorders. The medication is based on the totality of your symptoms including pre-existing disease. The medication works within hours when treating acute disease, and a bit longer depending on the chronic condition being treated.

Homeopathy is a medical system and has been used successfully in emergency medicine. The low dilutions of the medicines make it safe to use. In most cases conventional medicine can be used in conjunction with homeopathic remedies.

Should you need surgical intervention, you will be referred to the best specialists.

Homeopathic medicines are prescribed in the form of tablets, capsules, pillules, granules, powders, liquid drops, eye, nose and ear drops, ointments, gels, creams, injectable or drinkable ampoules and sprays.

The remedies are made from plants, minerals, chemicals, animal material, or even prescription medicines.

Using homeopathic medicines safely and effectively requires the guidance of a trained registered professional. Homeopathic remedies acts as a catalyst to stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself. Initially your symptoms may become worse before healing takes place, and this should be discussed with your homeopath.

Not all “homeopathic” remedies available in pharmacies are purely homeopathic. Some of these medications contain herbal medicines. Do not take any herbal medication or remedies containing herbal tinctures without the prescription from a trained natural healthcare practitioner. These herbal mother tinctures can interfere with your prescription drugs and have side-effects and contra-indications.  Contact your Homeopath for more information.

Homeopathic medicines should preferably not be taken immediately after substances that could interfere with absorption such as food, tobacco, strong tasting substances like coffee, toothpaste or mouthwash, menthol or peppermint.

The term “allopathic” is used to refer to the conventional medical practice of medicine. Allopathic medicine uses active chemically isolated substances, aimed at either suppressing specific biochemical functions in the body or killing specifically targeted organisms, such as bacteria, viruses or other pathogens. Side-effects are often caused by this approach because such substances affect more than just the biochemical process, organisms or pathogens targeted, leading to possible destruction of biochemical processes, important defence mechanisms and organisms.

Homeopathic and conventional treatments work well together. It is recommended that supply your practitioner with a list of your conventional drugs in order for them to give you the best advice.

Homeopathy Is Not...

…all alternative medicines grouped together. Rather it is a medical system of medicine based on principles according to the founder Dr Samuel Hahnemann. Some Homeopathic practitioners may implement other forms of alternative therapies in their practice, but these do not constitute “homeopathy”.

…reflexology. Reflexology is a therapy whereby pressure is applied to areas of the feet and hands. It cannot be used to diagnose or treat disease.

…herbal medicine. Herbal medicines use plants as a whole in a crude form. Herbal medicines have a physiological action and therefore have contra-indications and can interfere with prescription drugs and prescriptions. Herbal medicines are also not always safe and care should be taken to only take herbal remedies when prescribed by a qualified doctor. Do not use herbal remedies if you have hypertension, diabetes, cancer or any other serious chronic condition.

…energy medicine in the form of Reiki or other esoteric therapies. Homeopathic remedies refer to the actual substances prescribed when consulting a homeopathic practitioner.

…iridology. Iridology is not supported by medical science and cannot be used to accurately diagnose disease. It is an alternative medicine technique that claims that patterns, colours and characteristics in the eye determine the patient’s health.

…biofeedback. Biofeedback is based on the resonance of certain substances in the natural world. There are studies that contradict the efficacy of these treatments. Some alternative therapists have named this sort of treatment homeopathic, but the principles are very different from homeopathy. Some homeopaths use this method to confirm their own diagnoses, however this is not an accepted medical diagnostic machine and cannot be used to treat or diagnose disease. (For more in depth information, please consult Dr Audrey. She completed her dissertation on one of these machines.)
